Elizabeth House opened in December 2001 and was originally conceived in order to provide relief to overcrowded conditions at the Women's Emergency Accommodation Centre (WEAC) and to enable homeless women to gain the necessary skills needed for independent living. We provide a warm, safe, accepting living environment and assist our residents to become stable and to move back into the community.
We use a transitional, client-directed service planning model to assist and support our residents in their journey towards change. Working with homeless women means that we see and address many different issues, including addictions, prostitution, violence and abuse, and mental health issues.
Services provided include meals, emergency clothing, telephone access, medication administration, laundry facilities, crisis intervention and service planning. 24 hour staffing provides regular support and linkage to community resources.
Elizabeth House residents are primarily referred from the Women's Emergency Accommodation Centre (WEAC) as the next step from emergency housing to independent living. However, we do also take referrals from the community.
Elizabeth House is a warm, inviting home and an essential program for women who are taking steps from being homeless to independent living. We provide a calm, quiet environment and our residents are given assistance as they pursue their goals.
Funding for Elizabeth House is generously provided by Alberta Municipal Affairs and supplemented by community support and donations.
