E4C was founded in March 1970 by four of Edmonton's innercity churches - Augustana Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church, McDougall United Church and All Saints Anglican Cathedral. This merger of different faith communities to "do good in Canada" was so ground breaking it was covered in an article in the New York Times. Initially, Edmonton City Centre Church Corporation met the needs of homeless women out of the basement of McDougall United.

St. Joseph's Basillica and Christ Anglican later joined E4C and these innercity churches provide support and the volunteer board for the organizations.

In 2009, these founders were asked to renew their commitment to E4C and to work with the Board to examine governance and membership. In May of 2010, the Annual Meeting voted to revise the Articles of Association to extend invitations and expand E4C membership to other faith communities. The Board of Directors is currently working on a process to allow for this expansion. For more information on this process or membership contact lmiddaugh@e4calberta.org.
